In a recent court application, Opposition Leader Hon. Allen Chastanet successfully sought to protect the principles of democracy and ensure his rightful place in the House of Parliament. Mr Chastanet believed that his exclusion from parliamentary sittings by the Speaker and the Government side was an unlawful and unconstitutional attempt to silence the opposition and evade accountability.

The court hearing, which took place on May 15th, revealed that the Government intended to pass a motion to lift the suspension imposed on Hon. Chastanet. Consequently, the Speaker of the House, Claudius Francis, gave an undertaking to the Court with the same legal effect as an order. This undertaking guarantees Mr Chastanet’s attendance at future parliamentary sittings, subject to the motion to lift his suspension being addressed as a priority.

The Opposition Leader emphasized that this victory transcends his personal interests and instead upholds the democratic rights of the people. As an elected Member of Parliament, his presence in the House represents the voice of the citizens particularly the voice of the people of Micoud South, enabling him to hold the government accountable and advocate for the issues affecting the average St. Lucian.

One such pressing concern is the rising cost of living faced by struggling families. Mr. Chastanet highlighted the government’s allocation of $12 million to the Jazz festival while neglecting to subsidize essential commodities like bread, resulting in increased prices. He also raised concerns about elevated transportation costs, high fuel prices, and the lack of adequate support for displaced hotel workers. Additionally, he expressed his strong opposition to the impending 2.5% tax levy, asserting that it further burdens the already strained population.

Hon. Chastanet made it clear that he will continue to be a voice for the people and utilize all legal means to defend their rights. He underscored the importance of accountability, fairness, and responsible governance, urging the government to prioritize the well-being of all citizens rather than perpetuating policies that benefit only a select few. The Opposition Leader’s unwavering commitment to championing the interests of St. Lucians serves as a reminder that democracy requires constant vigilance and the active participation of all citizens.
