In 2021, as Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre formed his Cabinet, Saint Lucians looked on with anticipation, hoping for strong leadership in uncertain times. But what unfolded was both shocking and deeply troubling, there was no Minister for National Security appointed.
Let that sink in: at a time when violent crime was on the rise and citizens were crying out for safety, the government completely overlooked the one role tasked with protecting the people. It was not until the Opposition publicly flagged this glaring omission that Prime Minister Pierre scrambled to take on the portfolio himself only after being exposed.
This wasn’t just a mistake. It was a reflection of priorities. While crime festered and law enforcement struggled, security was left off the government’s radar. The lives of Saint Lucians were placed at risk, not by chance, but by careless governance.
Since then, we’ve seen the consequences. Homicides have skyrocketed. Communities live in fear. The police force remains under-equipped and under-supported. Meanwhile, the Prime Minister, now also the Minister for National Security, offers silence in the face of every new tragedy.
This is more than mismanagement it’s betrayal. The most basic duty of any government is to protect its citizens. Pierre’s delayed response and reactive leadership have proven he’s not up to the task.
Saint Lucia deserves better. We need a government that sees security as a priority not a political afterthought. Lives are at stake. And we cannot afford another year of indifference. #PierrePaBon#RightTheWrong#VoteUWP
