The United Workers Party Women’s Arm calls for a matter of utmost importance to be addressed: the allegations of sexual misconduct against the newly appointed Acting Commissioner of Police. The gravity of these allegations cannot be overstated, particularly when they involve multiple sources, including the victims themselves.
These allegations are deeply concerning and deserving of thorough investigation. The victims have endured fear, embarrassment, and victimization. Even more troubling is the alleged threats and intimidation they received after bravely reporting these incidents. We recognize and applaud their immense courage in their attempts to obtain justice and protection.
Now, these allegations were reported long ago, yet, little to no action seems to have been taken. This raises serious questions about the accountability and integrity of the Royal St Lucia Police Force and calls into question the reporting mechanisms within the Force. It is deeply troubling that the alleged offender was promoted without any ventilation or investigation into these serious allegations. Why not? Why were these grave allegations not investigated? This serves to further undermine public trust. How can our women trust the Police when they make a report of this nature? Where is the protection? A gender sensitive and equitable Police Force is the only way to prevent incidents of sexual misconduct.
Therefore, we call on Prime Minister Honourable Phillip J Pierre who has responsibility for National Security and Minister of Home Affairs Dr. Virginia Poyotte to take immediate action to address this matter. An independent and transparent investigation must be conducted to ascertain the veracity of the allegations so that appropriate action can be taken.
We call on the Prime Minister to rescind this appointment until the many allegations have been investigated.
We stand with all civil society groups and organizations that call for investigation of these alleged wrong doings. Most of all, we stand with the survivors of sexual misconduct and encourage them to speak up.
We are outraged that these allegations were not considered before the appointment was made and let it be clear, our commitment to this matter is unwavering.
