Recent reports indicating that the Government of Saint Lucia has engaged a British public relations firm for crisis management related to the Citizenship by Investment scandal, and to prepare a strategic plan for the Saint Lucia Labour Party’s upcoming general election campaign, have raised significant concerns. The alleged payment of £3 million to this firm, particularly at a time when Prime Minister Philip J Pierre claims that there are insufficient funds to assist those affected by Hurricane Beryl, demands urgent scrutiny and transparency.
The timing of this expenditure is especially troubling. In the wake of Hurricane Beryl, many Saint Lucians are struggling to rebuild their lives and livelihoods. Farmers, in particular, have faced devastating losses, yet the government’s response has been marred by declarations of financial constraints. The stark contrast between this professed lack of funds for essential relief and the substantial sum reportedly allocated to a foreign public relations firm is perplexing and disheartening.
Prime Minister Pierre’s continued silence on this matter exacerbates the issue. As the leader of the nation, he bears the responsibility of providing clarity and accountability to the public. The engagement of a high-cost PR firm for crisis management and electoral strategy, raises questions about the government’s priorities and fiscal management.
Saint Lucians deserve transparency and honesty from their government, especially in times of crisis. The allocation of public funds should be directed towards the immediate needs of the people, particularly those who are most vulnerable and affected by natural disasters. The use of substantial resources for political maneuvering and image management, while legitimate needs go unmet, is a troubling indication of misplaced priorities.
It also suggests a potential misuse of public funds for partisan purposes rather than addressing the pressing concerns of the citizenry. Philip J Pierre must prioritise the wellbeing of citizens over the protection of his rogue cabinet colleagues. This is not how Saint Lucians expect to be put first! #WTF#PierreEhCare#PuttingYouWorse#SaveOurSaintLucia
