Saint Lucia’s Deputy Prime Minister, Ernest Hilaire’s tenure as Minister with responsibility for Saint Lucia’s Citizenship by Investment Programme (CIP) has been marred by numerous allegations of corruption, failure to adhere to legal protocols, and a troubling lack of transparency. The failure of Mr. Hilaire to present annual reports and audited financial statements for the CIP Programme in parliament over the past two years raises significant concerns about the integrity and accountability of the entire operation under his leadership. This is a blatant violation of the law that should not be overlooked. Why the secrecy?
Another particularly glaring issue is the unaccounted US$1.4 billion/EC$3.7 Billion, a sum that cannot be dismissed as a minor oversight. This vast discrepancy suggests either gross negligence or, more alarmingly, intentional mismanagement. Such a situation erodes public trust and casts a shadow over Saint Lucia’s international reputation, which is vital for attracting legitimate investors. These issues coupled with the fact that Mr. Hilaire has a checkered past with the secret appointment of a Saudi arabian billionaire as an Ambassador, the Range Rover importation scandal and the illegal opening of a bank account with the Saudi billionaire whom he quietly appointed as an ambassador all are cause for concern.
Given these serious concerns, it is imperative that Ernest Hilaire should resign from his position. His resignation would not only allow for a thorough and impartial investigation into the CIP Programme but also signal to both citizens and potential investors that Saint Lucia is committed to upholding the highest standards of governance and transparency. Without such a step, the credibility of the CIP and the broader trust in government institutions remain at significant risk
