In 2018, the United Workers Party launched the Food Import Substitution Programme to reduce Saint Lucia’s dependency on imported food and boost local agriculture. This initiative targeted seven key crops: pineapple, watermelon, cantaloupe, sweet peppers, cucumbers, lettuce and tomatoes.
Under the programme Farmers were trained and supported to produce the seven targeted crops, significantly reducing the need for imports.
Seeds, fertilizers and equipment were provided at reduced costs to help farmers increase yields.
Farmers gained easier access to local markets, with hotels, supermarkets and restaurants encouraged to prioritize local produce.
We also upgraded agricultural roads and improved irrigation systems supported efficient production.
Young farmers received training and access to land, ensuring a new generation of agricultural leaders.
Under the UWP, local production of these key crops flourished, promoting food security, creating jobs and empowering farmers. The programme demonstrated UWP’s commitment to a resilient and self-sufficient Saint Lucia.
