Three years ago, you entrusted Philip J. Pierre and the Saint Lucia Labour Party with the governance of our beloved country. Now, it’s time to reflect on that decision and ask ourselves a critical question: Are we better off today than we were three years ago?
In the past three years, we have witnessed several concerning developments:
High Fuel and Cooking Gas Prices: Saint Lucians are paying the highest prices for fuel and cooking gas in the OECS, a burden that affects every household and business.
Rising Costs: The prices of bread, bus fares, electricity, passports, and most goods and services have seen significant increases, straining the budgets of ordinary citizens.
Misleading Taxation: We were misled about the true reason for the 2.5% tax, which adds to the financial strain on our people.
Infrastructure Decline: Our roads and water infrastructure are in the worst condition in our country’s history. Additionally, we no longer own Port Castries or the Soufrière waterfront, vital assets for our economy.
Unfinished Projects: St. Jude Hospital and the new Hewanorra International Airport, both projects that were already started, remain incomplete. This hampers our healthcare system and limits our potential for growth.
Agricultural Decline: We no longer export bananas to the United Kingdom, and our agricultural sector has declined by 15%. This affects our farmers and reduces our food security.
Victimisation: There has been an unprecedented level of perceived victimisation of UWP supporters working with the government, as well as staff of the Soufrière Regional Development Foundation and vendors in Castries.
Rampant Corruption: We have seen numerous corruption scandals, including the Banannes Land scandal, Emma’s secret deal with GPH, the National Lotteries borbol, and the missing US$1.4 billion of Citizenship by Investment funds.
Healthcare Crisis: Our hospitals and health centres lack essential medications and cleaning supplies, compromising the health and well-being of our citizens.
Rising Debt and Crime: The SLP has borrowed more in three years than the UWP did in five, increasing our national debt.
Additionally, there has been a 25% increase in the homicide rate, making our communities less safe.
As we reflect on these issues, it’s important to consider the impact on our daily lives. Have these three years brought positive change, or have they introduced new challenges and hardships? Are we truly better off today than we were three years ago?
This is not just a political question but a personal one that each of us must answer based on our experiences and observations. As Saint Lucians, we deserve leadership that truly serves our interests and addresses our concerns. It’s time to hold our leaders accountable and demand better for our future.
