In the realm of politics, narratives can often take on a life of their own, weaving a complex web of information and misinformation. The false claim that no new hotel rooms were constructed under the United Workers Party (UWP) administration has been fervently circulated by the SLP. However, a closer look at the evidence reveals a different story – one of significant hotel expansions and potential roadblocks.
Expanding Hotel Capacities: Contrary to the narrative perpetuated by some SLP hacks, the UWP administration oversaw notable expansions of hotel room capacities during their tenure. The tourism industry is a key driver of economic growth, and the UWP recognized the importance of not only maintaining existing accommodations but also enhancing the island’s attractiveness to travelers. Several hotels underwent expansions to meet growing demand, reflecting the administration’s commitment to fostering tourism development.
Some of the Hotels That Expanded
-Serenity at Coconut Bay: This adults-only resort expanded its room offerings, aligning with the UWP’s efforts to bolster tourism amenities.
-Bel Jou Hotel
-The Body Holiday: This luxury wellness resort expanded its accommodations, reflecting the administration’s efforts to accommodate diverse traveler preferences.
-Windjammer Landing
-Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort: This renowned property’s expansion is indicative of the UWP’s push for strategic development in the hospitality sector.
-Fond Doux completed in the current colonial style of the one-bedroom cottages on the property. Another four cottages were constructed by the end of 2017, boasting private plunge pools with designs focused on providing an authentic, Saint Lucian experience.
-In October 2016 Sandals Halcyon Beach Resort & Spa opened 12 newly built suites. The beachfront and garden view honeymoon butler suites feature spacious decks with private plunge pool and access to a personal butler and 24-hour room service.
-In 2017 both the Harbor Club and Royalton opened under the UWP administration.
It is important to acknowledge that the process of expanding and building new hotels can be complex and face challenges that extend beyond political affiliations. Saint Lucians can clearly remember that certain projects encountered delays and obstacles that impeded their progress. For instance, the construction of Sandals La Source, Cabot, and the hotel at the DSH project faced hurdles all perpetuated by the then Opposition SLP.
In the realm of politics, it is essential to discern fact from propaganda, especially when it comes to assessing the progress and developments achieved under different administrations.
The UWP administration demonstrated a commitment to enhancing Saint Lucia’s tourism sector through hotel expansions, aligning with the goal of boosting economic growth and attracting visitors from around the world. It is equally important to recognize the complexities that can arise in the execution of major projects, shedding light on the broader context that informs policy decisions.
