The party questions how a country with a Prime Minister boasting significant economic growth, a budget surplus, and an excess of over $80 million in collected excise tax could fail to remunerate its doctors.
It is disheartening that dedicated medical professionals, who play a critical role in providing quality healthcare to our citizens, are being faced with delayed gratuity payments upon the completion of their contracts. These doctors have devoted their time, expertise, and unwavering commitment to the well-being of our nation. It is incumbent upon the government to honor their contractual obligations promptly and demonstrate the respect these healthcare professionals deserve.
Furthermore, the UWP remains concerned about the negative impact on healthcare services due to the reduction in the budget allocated to this vital sector, as stated in the 2023/2024 Estimates of Revenue and Expenditure. Slashing funds intended for healthcare will undoubtedly have severe consequences for the overall well-being of our citizens and the efficiency of our healthcare system as we are already seeing. It is essential to prioritize the allocation of resources to ensure adequate healthcare provisions for all.
Amidst these concerning developments, it is disturbing that the Prime Minister will be introducing a new 2.5% tax claiming it in the name of Health and Security. While the government justifies this tax as necessary, it contradicts the fact that the budget for Healthcare has been reduced. This raises further questions regarding the SLP Administration’s claims of prudent fiscal management, leading to more questions regarding the allocation and management of public funds.
The United Workers Party urges the government to address these critical issues promptly and prioritize the well-being of both our healthcare professionals and citizens. We call for transparency in financial management, the prompt payment of gratuities to our doctors, and the reinstatement of adequate budgetary allocations to ensure a robust and effective healthcare system.
